The rules, plainly

Since 2008, paving a front garden of more than five square metres with an impermeable surface needs planning permission, unless the water drains to a permeable area or the surface itself is permeable. Build permeable and the question never arises. Every resin bound drive we install on an open-graded base is fully SUDS-compliant.

Three permeable routes

Resin bound gravel over an open-textured base is the premium seamless option. Permeable block paving drains through widened, chip-filled joints into an open sub-base. And a properly built gravel drive is permeable by nature. We install all three and match the system to your ground conditions, Lincolnshire clay needs different detailing from sand.

Where the water goes

Permeable surfacing works with attenuation beneath: open-graded stone that stores rainfall while it soaks away. Where ground drainage is poor we add a soakaway sized for the area, designed, dug and built by our own team.

Is resin bound really permeable?

Yes, the trowelled matrix leaves interconnected voids throughout. A correctly built resin bound drive can drain hundreds of litres per square metre per hour, far beyond any UK rainfall.

Do permeable drives clog up?

Slowly, at the surface, over years, an occasional jet wash restores the drainage. We hand over every drive with plain aftercare guidance.

Does permeable cost more?

The wearing surface costs the same; the open-graded base can cost slightly more than a standard one. Against the cost and delay of a planning application, permeable usually wins on money as well as time.
